In our district we are not being heard. Firstly, our schools are struggling, financially. The rate at which teachers are leaving the profession is increasing each year. Our county struggles to meet our needed budget to provide adequate education. Most of teachers are doing more with less and less each year. With the proposal of returning federal dollars for education, low county property taxes, and vouchers, money is sparse for education. Another challenge is blue collar workers and farming are large employers. Many of those workers are immigrants.ICE took people from our community and their families can’t find them. They were the bread winners. Another challenge is affordability of housing, food and gasoline. It is near impossible to rent.
Rolling back the voucher program is necessary. Other funding streams for education is critical. ICE needs to remain at the borders except for criminals. I will work to put them back there and out of our communities. We can not allow for ICE to take our mothers, fathers and employees in our community. We need down payment or deposit subsidies for housing, Minimum wage must be addressed and raised, incentives need to be given to employers that pay better than minimum. We need to repeal grocery taxes.
We must address minimum wage in Tennessee. We have too many CEOs becoming super-wealthy on the backs of workers that are struggling. Minimum wage in TN is still $7.25 and has been since 2009. The overall cost of living has risen over 50% since then. This means making even $10.00 an hour doesn’t meet the increase. The state should give incentives to communities that build affordable housing with subsidies for people that are working and trying to afford homes. The state legislature needs to repeal grocery taxes.
Since we spend the lowest per student in the United States. We need to pour all our efforts in the state toward education. An educated community is a health community. Education is what helps people be productive. First of all, we must spend more per student, secondly, teachers need to allowed to have more agency in what and how they teach. Each student is different, each class is different. Educators need to be able to be paid a living wage and be rewarded for training and extra education. Vouchers must be repealed. Parent choice is ok, but not at expense of our public schools.
Data centers are not necessarily bad but placement, use of resources and effects on the environment must be considered. We need strong regulation on data centers, that not only must they. Pay for all of their resources without any tax abatement, Many small communities have no zoning laws and no help for families saddled with inherited land that carries very little value.An effort must be made by the state to find healthy companies and buyers that want to buy land for good use. Effects on the area must be considered and a survey on the resources of the area must be done to secure adequate resources for the community before the land is sold to a data company.
