For decades, we saw disinvested in our schools. Turning that around won’t happen overnight — it will take sustained, long-term investments to make sure every child has the tools they need to succeed. That’s why I’ve fought to increase per-pupil funding and invest in evidence-based literacy programs that help kids learn to read. We’ve also passed legislation to return Michigan’s curriculum to a phonics-based approach.

We also need to make sure teachers and staff are properly supported. I have worked to secure funding to increase pay and passed legislation to help lower their healthcare costs.
The cost of living is simply too high. That’s why I’m focused on giving Michiganders a little extra breathing room in their budgets so they can actually get ahead — not just get by. I led the effort to repeal the retirement tax and passed the largest tax cut for working families in Michigan history. I worked to eliminated state taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security. We also made investments to make housing and childcare more affordable.

Now I’m focused on passing additional tax relief for families, while taking steps to lower the cost of healthcare costs and stop the constant utility rate hikes.
Families’ electric bills are getting out of control as utility companies continue to seek rate hikes year after year — even when customers aren’t seeing the reliable service they deserve in return.

That needs to change. I’ve introduced legislation to put an end to endless rate hikes and hold utilities like DTE and Consumers Energy accountable for the money they collect. Instead of padding shareholders’ pockets, these investments should go toward strengthening our grid, improving reliability, and ultimately helping drive down costs for Michigan families.

I also supported legislation to build more renewable energy in Michigan.
While only the United States Congress has the authority to comprehensively fix our broken immigration laws and rein in the inhumane actions of federal immigration authorities like ICE, there are still steps we can take here in Michigan to protect the civil liberties of every person in our communities.

That’s why my Senate colleagues and I passed a bipartisan resolution calling on Congress to strengthen oversight and accountability of federal immigration enforcement and ensure that officers act transparently, lawfully, and with respect for the constitutional rights and human dignity of every person.
