Occupation / Current Position Court of Appeals Judge
Education J.D., Wake Forest School of Law; B.A., Alma College
Qualifications and Experience Before joining the Court, he served over two decades as an employment, labor, education, municipal, and election law attorney at two of Michigan’s most respected firms—Clark Hill and Miller Canfield.
I believe deeply in the rule of law. Not as an abstract concept, but as a living promise. The rule of law means that no one—no matter how powerful, how popular, or how loud—gets special treatment. And it also means that every person who comes before the court deserves to be heard, respected, and judged fairly. Cases are not just numbers and words on a page. Each case has people behind it. My experience across employment, education, municipal, and election law gives me a broad perspective on the issues that come before the COA. I’m running for a full-term because I believe the people of Michigan deserve judges who respect the rule of law.
We handle appeals from any trial court in Michigan's 83 counties. On average the Court of Appeals disposes of around 2,000 cases a year. Typically, less than 100 are ever reviewed or modified by the Supreme Court. That means the Court of Appeals is the final word in about 99% of all lawsuits in this state. The decisions we make don’t just affect one case, they shape Michigan law for years to come. Since joining the bench in May 2025, I have reviewed and rendered a decision in over 1,000 matters. This requires experience, sound judgment, humility and the ability to keep pace with an extremely busy docket.
The Court of Appeals should work to improve accessibility and transparency of the justice system by increasing civic engagement. We also should continue to focus on increasing efficiency by leveraging emerging technologies to reduce the average time it takes to resolve an appeal.
As with all cases, I will adhere to the rule of law and the Constitutions of the United States and State of Michigan.
