Unfortunately, Michigan tends to underfund its schools and rural and tribal districts like ours feel it most. I'd like to see us fully fund the public school , raise teacher pay to recruit and retain educators, and expand career and technical education so students have supportive paths to good jobs. I'd reduce over-reliance on standardized testing, which measures zip codes more than learning and redirect that time to allow our educators to focus more on teaching. I oppose vouchers that use public dollars and believe decisions about our schools should include local educators as well as parents.
Affordability is the issue I hear about frequently. Families are working hard and falling behind on mortgages, childcare costs, and utilities. I support raising the minimum wage toward a true living wage, protecting workers' right to organize, and investing in affordable housing and childcare which are both essential in a functional economy. I'd push for utility accountability to stop unfair rate hikes and encourage economic development that supports the workers within our communities through skilled trades and small business support, rather than just subsidizing outside corporations.
In Northern Michigan we rely on our natural resources so protecting them isn't political, it's necessary. I'd like to see reliable, affordable energy and to hold utility companies accountable for the rate hikes and outages that hit rural families hardest. I support investing in energy efficiency and clean energy that will create local jobs, strengthening Great Lakes protections, and ensuring sacred sites and Tribal lands are respected in energy decisions. Reliability, affordability, and stewardship are vital and we must achieve all three for future generations.
Constitutional rights like due process, free speech, and protection from unreasonable searches apply to everyone in Michigan, not just citizens. As a tribal citizen, I understand what's at stake when government decides whose rights matter more. I support ensuring all residents can access courts, report crimes, and seek care without fear. Local law enforcement resources should protect our communities and not be diverted into federal immigration enforcement. Fairness and equal protection under the law are foundational American values worth defending.
