As a teacher, I know our system is broken. A quality education is learner-led, inspires curiosity and equips students with tools for problem-solving, self-control, critical thinking and citizenship. Standardized testing teaches kids how to pass a test and coerces teachers to teach to a test. Frequent testing robs students of valuable instruction time. Teachers wear too many hats--nurse, social worker, hall monitor, referee and caregiver. We need manpower-- not constant curriculum changes that line the pockets of for-profit corporations. We need more purpose-driven teachers, aides, interventionists and support staff paid living wages.
I will support Michigan's own Medicare For All bill, MiCare. No more copays, no more premiums, no more deductibles--just a payroll tax significantly less than what the average Michigander spends on care. Medical debt will be a thing of the past. I will sponsor legislation that will expand day care subsidies for parents to train for a job or go to work. I will fully fund our schools so that parents never have to send students with cash. Breakfast, lunch, snacks, field trips, athletic fees, art supplies, skill camps, jerseys and all the little extras add up. Tax dollars should invest in our communities and schools are the best place to start.
DTE, Consumers, oil and gas industries should not be able to donate to candidate campaigns. As industries receiving significant tax dollars for operation and maintenance, campaign donations cast doubt on who our politicians represent. I will sponsor legislation that caps Consumer and DTE profits. I will sponsor legislation that caps utility costs for disabled veterans and anyone receiving social security income. I will support legislation that gets Michigan closer to our goal to be solely powered by renewable energy by 2040. I will support legislation that builds a regulatory framework to keep data centers in check--before we need it.
The Fifth and Fourteenth Amendment guarantees due process for all--citizen or not. The Fourth Amendment protects all from unreasonable search and seizure--citizen or not.

Freedom of speech, freedom to peacefully gather, freedom of religion AND freedom from religion are all enshrined in the First Amendment.

The Bill of Rights spells out our most basic dignities. It is the floor--not the ceiling. These right are non-negotiable. Elected or not, I'll defend these freedoms with everything I have, just as patriots have done for generations before us.
