We cannot deny that too many of our students are falling behind after years of forcing schools to do more with less and failing to realize student needs. Education funding has flatlined since 2000 while the demands on our schools have only increased. We need to invest in early childhood education, teacher retention and support services for students. That is why I was proud to protect universal school meals and universal pre-K for all 4-year-olds. It is why I want to expand early learning and further increase teacher supports and mental health services.
While Lansing can't fix every affordability crisis, there are three ways we can make life more affordable: housing, healthcare and utilities. It's why I led efforts this term to reform state building codes to make it easier to build smaller apartment buildings and voted to curb investors from buying up homes. It's why I support sensible price caps on prescription drugs and making sure data centers pay their way without saddling us with higher electric rates.
We also need to put more Michiganders on paths to higher wages. That's why I support expanding worker retraining and making it easier for employees to unionize for better wages.
Ratepayers across Michigan are rightfully angry to see rate increase after rate increase while reliability is still a problem. That is why I support reforming our rate-setting process to ensure reliability and performance are more important factors when the Public Service Commission approves new rates.
Our energy future will depend on tapping affordable, clean energy over pricier fossil fuels. Iran can cut off the Straight of Hormuz but cannot cut off the Sun. That is why we need to protect our state's 100% clean energy plan and accelerate our efforts to move away from fossil fuels to wind, solar and modern nuclear.
We can keep our communities and borders safe while protecting the rights of people just living their lives and striving for the American Dream. While too many politicians have been afraid to speak out against the Trump Administration's assault on those rights through a rogue agency like ICE, the first floor speech I gave as a state representative was against measures to block state funding to local governments that protect the Fourth Amendment.
While Lansing does not control a federal agency, I have personally supported state legislation to ban ICE agents from using face masks or entering public facilities without true judicial warrants.
