It's clear that Michigan needs to make improvements to our education system. Unfortunately, we're in a time where literacy rates are at an all-time low, teacher retention rates have been steadily decreasing, and many students do not receive the necessary resources they need to succeed. In my two terms as state representative, I have continued to support increased funding in the School Aid Budget, and we must continut focusing on improving our student's literacy skills, increasing funding for at-risk students and bilingual education, and ensuring our teachers are adequately compensated are essential to improving our education system.
Michigan families are working tirelessly just to afford basic essentials like groceries, gas, and health care. Raising a family shouldn’t be a struggle. We can lower the cost of childcare, guarantee access to paid family leave, and expand child and family tax credits to give parents the cash they need for the basics. We can also do more to ensure everyone has access to affordable housing by building more homes and investing in affordable housing projects to lower rent. Moreover, we can reign in the cost of utilities like water and electricity, ban surge pricing and junk fees, and protect people from predatory practices.
Ensuring our enviornment and natural resources are protected is one of my top priorities. I firmly believe that we must work to transition Michigan to clean energy sources to protect our enviornment, and reduce energy costs for Michigan families. Better insulation, energy-efficient appliances, LED lighting, heat pumps, and smart thermostats can all lead to reduced energy consumption and lower bills. Additionally, one of my main focus areas has been PFAS contamination. I am spearheading a bill package to expedite cleanup, monitor PFAS contamination, and implement common sense standards and regulations around their use in various products.
I unequivocally denounce the measures by ICE agents across our country. Immigrants are not our enemies and for anyone who prefers facts over fear mongering, immigrants help grow our economy! That is the consensus of economists who know far more than I do based on a strong body of research. Regardless, our constitutional rights and freedoms are the bedrock of our country, and I will never stop ensuring every individual in our state is given equal protection under the law which is why I co-sponsored House Bills 4858-4859 and HB 4941-4944 of 2026 to restrict certain immigration actions and bolster the rights of individuals detained by ICE.
