I believe the current education system is evolving to a much better level of quality. Recent bipartisan efforts to roll out the "science of reading" and funding for literacy coach's continues to raise the standards and quality of education. I would continue to push for additional funds to be focused on at risk students, English learning students and students with disabilities. As well as focus additional funding for high-poverty areas.
I support every effort to continue to increase the minimum wage to a level that is truly a living wage. I would further defend and work to expand the states Working Families Tax Credit to put cash back into the pockets of low-to-moderate-income workers. I will always fight to strengthen collective bargaining rights so unions can negotiate better pay, benefits, and workplace safety.
As a strong democrat I am committed to reaching 100% clean energy in the state of Michigan by 2040. I would continue to hold corporations accountable for high rates and preventing power outages. I would fight to expand state programs for weatherization and energy efficiency to lower household monthly heating and cooling bills while protecting low-income residents/seniors from utility shutoffs. I'd fight to protect consumers from being victims of price gouging with the assistance of the Michigan Public Service Commission.
Due process is a universal human right guaranteed by the 14th Amendment that applies to every individual within Michigan's borders, completely independent of their immigration status. I would fight to establish independent civilian oversight boards with subpoena power for state and local law enforcement to investigate misconduct and the elimination of cash bail, which creates a dual justice system based on wealth rather than public safety.
