Michigan has made progress on education funding, but that alone don’t ensure good outcomes. As a parent of two, the daughter of a vocational ed teacher and married to a CS teacher, I understand what educators face daily. I support moving to a weighted funding formula. Every child learns differently and requires different supports. I’m proud to represent high-performing districts like Novi, but zip codes shouldn't determine educational quality. On the teacher workforce, we must address compensation and burnout to keep great educators in the classroom. Testing should be a diagnostic tool, not a punitive one, & too much time is spent on it.
We delivered real results last term — raising the minimum wage, restoring workers’ right to organize, and expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit to put money back in working families’ pockets. We repealed the retirement tax and delivered real relief to seniors. But affordability means more than wages. Housing costs, grocery prices, and utility bills are stretching families thin. I support strengthening consumer protections and cracking down on price gouging — corporations shouldn’t profit from people’s basic needs. The work isn’t finished, and I’ll keep fighting to make Michigan a place where working families can actually get ahead.
Michigan’s clean energy package passed last term was a landmark achievement, setting us on a path to 100% clean energy by 2040 while creating good-paying jobs. But reliability and affordability have to go hand in hand with that transition. We need strong oversight of utility rates and holding energy companies accountable to consumers. Data centers in Michigan aren’t going away, they are inevitable & if located in other countries present a real security risk. We need real guardrails ensuring they don’t strain our grid, deplete local water supplies, or shift costs onto ratepayers. Clean, reliable, affordable energy for families is a clear need.
Due process isn’t a gift, but a constitutional mandate for everyone on American soil, regardless of citizenship status. Federal law enforcement actions can erode trust in local law enforcement, & I support additional training to include cultural diversity & competency to help local officers deal with these specific instances. I sponsored legislation prohibiting the use of public funds for unconstitutional purposes — taxpayer dollars should never be used to violate anyone’s rights. Where federal enforcement has eroded these protections, states must step up to include specifically requiring judicial warrants over administrative.
