Occupation / Current Position State Representative for Michigan House District 7
Education BA University of Michigan, JD University of Michigan Law School
Qualifications and Experience Prior to my work as a legislator, I worked as a public-interest lawyer and public-policy advocate.
Education has improved, but more is needed. Equitable funding is crucial—without it, high-need districts have larger class sizes and fewer programs. Recruiting and keeping quality educators requires better benefits and incentives. Schools also need more on-site mental health professionals, because students can't learn well during a crisis. When these needs are met, test scores rise. For example, Detroit Public Schools Community District has outpaced Michigan and most similar districts in post-pandemic recovery.

Increasing affordability is one of my top priorities.

I sponsored winter shutoff protections, co-sponsored bills to automate outage credits and ban credit card surcharges, and proposed capping utility ROI at 7%. I secured $5M for Detroit water affordability.

I sponsored a bill for foreclosure tax relief, co-sponsored homeowner protection bills, and secured state funding for legal aid for those facing eviction.

I support unions and higher wages and helped win Michigan’s 2025 minimum wage increase and our first-ever right-to-paid-sick-time law.

I support expanding childcare access by supporting increased state funding and cost-sharing.

I am committed to making utilities more affordable and protecting our environment. I will continue to defend the Michigan Clean Energy and Jobs Act to diversify energy sources, create good-paying jobs, and lower costs. I have taken legislative action to limit utility companies’ profits, codify winter shutoff protections, automate and increase consumer credits during outages, and ban credit card surcharges on utility bills. I’m also advocating for more funding to help families pay their utility bills. I co-sponsored a bill to expand community solar, saving families at least 10%—and 20% for low-income households—on utility costs.
The U.S. Constitution provides due process, First Amendment, and Fourth Amendment rights to all; these rights are sacrosanct. I believe ICE should be abolished, but since state lawmakers can’t abolish it, we must restrict it. I’ve co-sponsored bills to ban law enforcement from wearing masks, allow lawmakers detention center oversight, exempt schools, hospitals, and worship spaces from immigration enforcement, ban state property sales for immigration enforcement, and strengthen state habeas protections. I’m committed to defending human and constitutional rights for all and have sponsored a bill to expand freedom-of-speech protections.
