Our public schools and teachers are excellent, but they keep being asked to do more with less, and the results are reflected in some measures of student performance. I support fully-funded public schools, including student support services, career and technical education, and pathways for the trades. I support expanding access to early childhood education, bolstering special education services, and ensuring teachers are fairly compensated and have manageable class sizes. Standardized assessments can provide useful information, but teachers and parents alike know that students are spending way too much time testing at the expense of learning.
Working families are doing everything right and still struggling to keep up with rising costs. Too many people work hard but fall behind. Wages have not kept pace with the cost of housing, child care, health care, and other necessities. I support policies that protect collective bargaining, raise wages, expand paid leave, and make child care more accessible. I will work to expand affordable housing, lower prescription drug costs, protect access to health care, and make it easier for families to afford child care and higher education. We can lower these costs by investing funds in regular people rather than giveaways for wealthy corporations.
Residents are frustrated by high bills and a lack of accountability from utility companies. Michigan families deserve reliable, affordable energy service, and I support stronger oversight and accountability for utilities to ensure consumers are protected. I will champion clean energy solutions that lower costs over time, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and strengthen resilience to extreme weather, while continuing to invest in infrastructure, parks, and public spaces that improve quality of life in communities across the state. We have the tools to transition away from fossil fuels, and Michigan should be a leader in clean energy production.
The terror wrought by ICE in communities across the nation is horrifying. If the federal government is out of control, it is incumbent on the state to fight for its residents. All people are entitled to basic due process rights and not targeting by ICE due to the color of their skin or the language they speak. We must pass commonsense restrictions on ICE officers in Michigan, including banning masks, keeping them away from schools, courthouses, and hospitals, requiring judicial warrants for any actions at state facilities, and ending coordination contracts with ICE. A fair and just immigration system does not require terrorizing anyone.
