Qualifications and Experience
I have 39 years of public service, including over 20 years in the Air Force (retired Lt. Col.). I served 14 years on the Huron Valley School Board. I also served as Oakland County Deputy Executive.
Michigan’s education system faces challenges in student achievement and in recruiting and retaining educators. Through my 14 years on the Huron Valley School Board, I saw firsthand the impact great teachers have when they engage and inspire students. Competitive pay and benefits matter, but we must also value educators by giving them the trust and flexibility to meet students where they are. Assessments are necessary to measure progress and ensure accountability, but they should inform instruction, not dominate it. My top priority is early literacy, supported by evidence-based instruction, tutoring, and stronger partnerships with parents.
Every Michigander is feeling the pressure of rising costs, and we need a multipronged approach that tackles the crisis. I support expanding access to affordable healthcare, including strengthening the Healthy Michigan Plan, increasing cost transparency, and reducing medical debt. We also need to invest in affordable housing and incentivize zoning reform to spur more housing projects. The state should strengthen programs like Tri-Share to help families manage childcare costs and keep parents in the workforce. We need to create good-paying jobs through economic and workforce development, support small businesses, and invest in skills training.
We must ensure utilities deliver quality service while curbing rate increases. That means investing in infrastructure to modernize aging systems and improve reliability. We should invest in energy efficiency programs to lower costs and strengthen consumer protections to prevent shutoffs during extreme weather and tie rate increases to performance.
These are part of a broader Michigan tradition of being great stewards of our natural resources. Our water and land are key to our state’s identity, and we must continue to protect them for future generations by investing in conservation programs and enacting strong environmental protections.
The Founders designed the Bill of Rights to protect the liberties of all people. Due process, First Amendment, and Fourth Amendment protections are at the core of those liberties. We must safeguard them for all people in our country, whether they are current immigrants or fifth-generation immigrants. Supreme Court rulings have well established that these rights extend to all people.
A strong democracy is measured by how well we protect these principles and ensure fair treatment for everyone. These rights are essential to maintaining trust in our justice system and the rule of law, and I support their consistent enforcement without exception.
