What are your qualifications for this position?
How do you understand the role and limits of a municipal court judge, particularly in handling city ordinance violations and misdemeanors under state law?
How would you ensure defendants are treated fairly by the municipal court?
I graduated from University of North Dakota School of Law in 2009. I was licensed in North Dakota that same year and began working in private practice. I later worked for several years as a prosecutor in Ward County and later took a contract position with the state as a public defender to allow for greater flexibility as my children were very little. In 2018, I ran for Minot Municipal Judge against the longtime incumbent Mark Rasmuson. I won and then was re-elected in 2022.
Municipal Court is a court of limited jurisdiction. As municipal judge, I handle and decide cases that constitute misdemeanor, infraction, or traffic offenses under Minot city ordinances. It is my job to hear and consider each case and decide it fairly while applying the applicable ordinance(s) as it/they presently exist(s). We have also strive to connect defendants to local resources to address mental health, addiction, housing and transportation to improve outcomes and reduce recidivism.
By ensuring, to the greatest extent possible, that the proceedings are conducted in the language and manner in which a defendant can understand and meaningfully participate and that they are represented by counsel in all cases in which the same is statutorily required or otherwise necessary to ensure fairness.
