I live and work full-time as an attorney serving the residents of Mcintosh County. I believe it important that whomever is elected State's Attorney is a full-time resident of the county, in order to be available to law enforcement, various public entities, and the residents of the county when needed. In addition to the usual duties and expectations of the office of State's Attorney, I believe that outreach by the States Attorney's office is important, such as visiting and speaking at schools.
I have had nearly 40 years of varied legal experience, including serving as a Federal Attorney, McHenry County State's Attorney, Williams County assistant State's Attorney, Fargo City prosecutor, and in private practice. I was the supervising attorney for Fargo office of Legal Assistance of North Dakota, managing attorney for the Grand Forks office of Legal Services of North Dakota, and also served as a public defender in Grand Forks and in the Fargo Public Defender Office.
That every individual receive equal access to justice in the state's courts is the Paramount duty of the State's Attorney. I have had extensive experience not only as a prosecutor but also as a defense attorney. I believe my experience in working with both victims and defendants, as well as working with individuals from every Walk of Life, and of various means and circumstances, gives me the knowledge, compassion, and understanding to ensure fairness and equality for all as States Attorney.
In my experience as both a prosecutor and as a defense attorney, every defendant is different. Each criminal case has to be weighed very carefully, and each defendant and defendant's crime examined closely. Available programs and alternatives to incarceration need to be considered, as well as Justice for victims and safety concerns for the public. The States Attorney's role is central to all of this and is a great responsibility that must be taken seriously and given considerable thought.
