Horry County School Board District 3

The Horry County school district is governed by a 12-member Board of Education. Eleven members are elected from single-member districts for 4-year staggered terms. The Board, which has legal authority for the operation of all public schools in Horry County, acts to interpret the educational needs of the County and then meets those needs with policies and facilities that stimulate the student and the learning process. The Board hires the Superintendent who is a professional educator employed to advise the Board on all matters concerning management of the schools and to administer laws.

I am motivated to serve on the school board because our students, teachers, and support staff deserve the highest level of leadership—leadership that understands both the classroom and the system as a whole. We need a clear vision to anticipate future needs while staying committed to the educational priorities that matter most. My experience as an educator, Army officer, and community leader has equipped me with the knowledge, leadership, and perspective needed to meet the challenges ahead.
We must not lose sight of the mental health challenges many of our students may face. It is essential that sufficient resources are available to support students who are struggling and to help them navigate difficult circumstances. When school staff become aware of concerns that may affect a student’s well-being, they should be equipped to work with parents to connect that student with appropriate mental health resources. Schools and families must work together.

I can summarize my motivation in one sentence. Education is at the root of many of our societal problems but it is also the solution to many problems. I desire Horry School to be a part of the solution in this county. Therefore, there are two issues to tackle. The first is the values that the school transmits through curriculum, teachers, and leadership of the adults in the students lives. We need to help the students see the values of faith, family, and freedom. The second is transparency.
The school counselors are available to help parents and students. The state is encouraging the school districts to have available volunteer chaplains for the students. This would be a good addition to the help they can receive. We should be sure and include parents through after school parenting classes or other events that help them. The parents are the key to the students success. They must have a stable two parent nuclear family that loves and cares for them.
