First, to be responsive and accountable to the people of the state. Second, to lead the office of Attorney General with sound leadership skills and effectiveness. Third, to maintain a productive and responsible state agency that serves the best interest of the citizens of the state in law enforcement, justice, and uphold the Constitution.
The top priority is to critically review the criminal justice system by conducting a thorough study of our laws and criminal justice process from listening to state's attorneys, defense attorneys, law enforcement officials, and judges. North Dakota could be the model for the nation to cut repeat offenders and curb mental health issues and crime. Also, look at consumer protection issues and advocate for the best possible support. Be transparent.
Respect their role in government and work with them in an honest and responsive manner. Act with integrity.
There is a federal court threshold for cases to be heard. I would work with the US Attorney in criminal matters. In civil matters, I would review the facts and the law, listen to advice, and decide what the best course of action to take, federal or state court.
I would prioritize mental health as a major issue in our protecting the public's safety. Also, work with all stake holders in the criminal justice system to make improvements and reforms for public safety.
Working with law enforcement and community partners to improve public safety all across North Dakota, while bolstering adherence to rule of law in all criminal and civil matters on behalf of the citizens of our great state. Right-sized, smart regulation that promotes public health and safety, cognizant of our twin stewardship obligations to an economy that provides opportunities for all North Dakotans.
Truth in sentencing, such that the sentences served by violent criminals will reflect the sentences that are imposed by our judges. We have been fighting the last several years to make the North Dakota public aware that their prison system lacks transparency and lacks accountability. The people in North Dakota deserve these protections rather than the system of early prison release that routinely undermine’s law enforcement efforts to protect the public from violent criminals. It is time!
There are already significant improvements with the new direction for the ethics commission, and I encourage them to embrace candid, substantive approaches that respect the due process rights of all participants in the process. I’m committed to helping the ethics commission regain the confidence they have lost with so many people.
We decide these matters with one thing in mind: the best interests of North Dakota and our people. We carefully consider which matters we’ll sign onto or which lawsuits we bring on behalf of our state and ask others to sign onto. We have had many successes as we battle to promote the interests of our state and our citizens.
Safer communities through accountability for violent criminals, drug traffickers, child predators and fraudsters. We will continue to strengthen the important partnerships between the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation and all state, local, federal, and tribal law enforcement working together for the people of North Dakota.
