My district is very concerned about property tax increases and public education funding. Many in my district are property rich because home values have gone up, but cash poor because they're on a fixed income. I have spent a lot of time focusing on making sure that the school districts I represent, Avonworth, Hampton, and North Allegheny, get their fair share of funding increases to keep up with inflation so that my community will not have to sacrifice quality of education or raise taxes.
I believe our elections are safe and secure. I have long been an advocate for election day registration, implementation of early in-person voting, pre-canvassing of mail-in ballots so that they can be counted more quickly on election day, and increased voting by mail. Our democracy thrives when people have free and fair access to the ballot box and trust in the results.
With divided government and only a one-vote majority in the State House, the budget negotiations are very complex. They largely take place between leadership of both chambers and the Governor. I would like to see where the budgets are passed on time, particularly so that local school districts and non-profit organizations that rely on grants and funding from the state don't have to go without while trying to figure out how to continue their critical work. I also support more transparency on the negotiations among all members of the legislature prior to a final vote.
I am very concerned about the affordability of electricity given the increased strain on the grid by data centers. I was proud to vote for Rep. Matzie’s legislation, HB 1834, to put in place comprehensive protections for ratepayers, support energy affordability programs, and begin integrating cleaner energy resources in the development and operation of data centers.
