The most pressing issues facing our country today are our economic health, our mental, physical, and civic wellbeing. I am working for solutions to lowering everyday costs, including those on housing, energy, and more. We must continue to robustly fund critical programs that promote access to affordable healthcare. I will support legislation that lowers prescription drug costs, lowers barriers to life-saving treatments, protects a woman’s right to choose, safeguards ACA subsidies, and keeps premiums down. And I will work to strengthen our democracy and uphold the rule of law — at this time of great challenge to our constitutional republic. Finally, I work everyday to combat the corruption and indecency of the current administration.
The Founders wisely embedded the separation of powers and checks and balances into the Constitution. The legislative branch is constitutionally obligated to prevent grotesque overreach by the other branches, including the executive. To exercise proper oversight, Congress must be active in exercising its Article I powers – particularly Section 8 and Section 9; only Congress has the power to declare war, to tax, and to appropriate funds by law. And, of course, the legislative branch has a critical role to play in ensuring transparency in the executive branch through robust oversight into government agencies.
As the global superpower, the United States is the indispensable nation. On the Foreign Affairs Committee, I see firsthand what role Congress should play in foreign policy. We are uniquely positioned to be a force for good in the international community. Accordingly, Congress is vital – we must continue to appropriate vital humanitarian aid and stand with our allies – especially those in NATO – to hold our adversaries accountable. If we seek to promote good governance and stability abroad, we must first do so at home. I deplore the unauthorized use of force, canceling of appropriated funds, the arbitrary use of tariffs, disregard for Congress by the current administration, and the breach of trust and disrespect for our allies.
The irresponsible recision of critical federal programs is putting the healthcare of hardworking Americans at risk. I am eager to expand the support offered by critical ACA tax credits – without which many thousands, just in the Fourth Congressional District, would not be able to afford their healthcare. We must continue to build on the work accomplished by the Inflation Reduction Act, and enable Medicare and Medicaid to negotiate lower drug prices for an expanded schedule of common medications. And I intend to work across the aisle in passing legislation that lowers surprise bills, lowers out-of-pocket costs for treatment, and gets generic drugs to market quicker. Our goal must be to make healthcare affordable and accessible for ALL.
