Training and Experience I began my legal career at Legal Aid, then transitioned to private practice representing Social Security Disability and SSI claimants. Besides my work and volunteer experience and continuing legal education, I’ve attended many trainings to hone my skills in voter contact methods, organizing, presenting legislative testimony, candidate support and more.
Volunteer/Community Service Volunteer with Indivisible and the Democratic Party: gathering petition signatures; legislative testimony; canvassing to promote candidates and get out the vote; Precinct Captain since 2019; County Dem Club officer since 2020.
Ohioans began electing Central Committeemembers at the close of the Gilded Age in response to the machine politics of the era, and I believe committee members’ most important function is to serve as a liaison between voters, County Parties and the State Party; and to serve as a check on the power of large donors and political elites. The State Central Committee functions similarly to the Board of Directors of a corporation, in that we aren’t responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Party. Electing the Chair of the Ohio Democratic Party - who runs the party -, and endorsing candidates (or not), are usually the most important votes we cast. I believe our votes on both these matters require careful consideration of all the issues and candidates, not just deferring to a subcommittee.
My top priority if re-elected will be to continue to advocate for greater transparency and accessibility in the Ohio Democratic Party. I am a strong supporter of virtual or hybrid meetings (when not prohibited by DNC Rules), both because it gives the public a window into our meetings, and because it makes it possible for people to serve on the State Central Committee when disability and/or economic situation may make it difficult for them to attend in person. I will continue to make myself available to voters and county parties within my district and support their work as best I can. I spearheaded and helped draft the bylaw that now requires the State and County Parties to remain neutral in most primaries, and I will continue to object strongly to any endorsement that violates that rule.
I will continue to reach out one-on-one to voters. I help people register to vote, talk with them about candidates and the mechanics of voting, deliver absentee ballot applications, and follow up to make sure people vote. I will continue to post information about candidates and voting on social media, especially new voting restrictions. On a state level, I believe holding firm to our pledge of neutrality in primaries encourages voter participation by letting voters know we honor their opinions. Recruiting great candidates and working on citizen ballot initiatives builds excitement, and helps voters believe they’ll be voting for something worthwhile. Having something and/or someone they really want to vote for is, in my view, the best way to encourage voter participation.
