I’ve achieved degrees, accreditations, licenses & been blessed to combine a professional media career w/running successful businesses. But it is my experience as a father, husband, son, neighbor, teammate, non-profit board member/volunteer & long-time (28yrs) El Lago resident that best qualifies me as a candidate. Proving responsible for making payroll, following budgets & meeting critical deadlines while managing a team & satisfying up to 250 different clients at a time will also be helpful.
The biggest challenge facing El Lago residents is the lack of home insurance competition & options within the city. This is a direct result of not participating in the Texas Windstorm Insurance Assoc. (TWIA) w/our neighbors that surround us & benefit significantly. Half of our 77586 zip code in Harris County participates in TWIA (& all of Galveston Co) w/many ‘reasonably-priced’ private home insurance options where EL Lago falls just west of an imaginary dividing line TWIA drew & has become stigmatized from a real estate prospective because there are no ‘reasonably-priced’ insurance options. The second biggest challenge is that most El Lago property owners are being accessed & taxed at a higher value for their home by the appraisal district than they could currently sell their home for. This is due to the extreme cost of home insurance in El Lago that balloons buyer’s monthly escrow payments. The solution is to unite all of 77586 into TWIA increasing competition & lowering prices.
Targeting El Lago’s drainage & sewer systems for grants & investment would have been my initial focus as our city’s drainage system has been tested many times by named storms & hurricanes (Alicia, Allison, Ike, etc.) & fell short for some residents during Hurricane Harvey. But thanks to those w/ the city of El Lago, the Water Control Improvement District (WCID) 50 & Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia’s office, El Lago recently completed a massive, three-year, $15,000,000 Drainage & Infrastructure Improvement project. Following that successful investment which worked as advertised during hurricane Beryl, I would focus public safety, public works & city parks to make El Lago as safe & comfortable place to live as possible.
Additional campaign priorities include a focus on further protecting resident property rights & increasing resident resale values. But my first priority as a father of two school-aged kids is to enhance public safety, especially for El Lago children. I’ve worked both (reluctantly) in front of the camera & behind the scenes to enhance public safety for our community. A recent example includes requesting a log of calls for police service to key addresses from the Lakeview Police Department to present to the Clear Creek Independent School District (CCISD) to successfully relocate a very, very unfortunately-located bus stop to a much safer location for the kids. Another focus will be pushing to limit the max amount the appraisal district can increase the accessed value on area homes from 10% a year down to 5%. Too few El Lago residents could sell their houses today for what the appraisal district is taxing them on, including even those contesting their valuation every year like I do.
