Brookline Town Meeting - Pct 17 - One Year
{_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}
Town Meeting is Brookline s Legislative arm of government. It consists of 255 elected Town Meeting Members plus the members of the Select Board, and any state representative or state senator who resides in Brookline. In addition, the Town Moderator, who presides over Town Meeting, and the elected Town Clerk, who acts as secretary, are voting members. The 255 membersare elected by precinct, with 15 members elected from each of the Town s seventeen precincts. The members are elected for staggered, 3-year terms so that 5 members are elected from each precinct each year in the May annual town election. Depending on vacancies some precincts will have more members to be elected.Town Meeting is responsible for passing a balanced annual town budget and enacts all town by-laws. An Annual Town Meeting is held in the spring to enact the following year s budget, plus whatever other matters are placed on the Town Meeting Warrant, either by the Select Board or by citizen petition. The Annual Town Meeting is usually held the last week in May or the first week in June. A Special Town Meeting is held each fall, usually in November, to deal with any budget changes, zoning by-law amendments or other matters placed on the warrant. In my conversations with constituents, the number one concern is our structural deficit and its implications for an override. While I am a strong Yes vote on the override and the services that would be supported, I think that our town government needs to work together to increase commercial development. With a coordinated effort, we can lessen the burden on residential taxation. This issue needs to be addressed first and foremost as it has implications for all of the services provided by the town. I thank the Town Administrator for his efforts to educate Brookline residents about our budget and financial challenges. It is time for Town Meeting Members to help educate the public as well and support commercial development efforts.

Hi! I'm Elizabeth and I've lived in Brookline for almost 10 years. I live in Coolidge Corner with my husband, our dog, and our two cats. We love that everything we need is a 10 minute walk or a quick ride on the T. When not at work as an attorney at a pharmaceutical company, I spend my time running and playing the cello. This past year I served as a caucused Town Meeting Member for Precinct 17. Now I'm running for Town Meeting Member so that I can continue to serve my community.
I'm particularly concerned with Brookline's housing shortage, Brookline's financial issues, and resulting override votes. Because Brookline has resisted building more high density housing, Brookline's town revenue has decreased resulting in a need for constant override votes to fund the town and its schools. By building more housing, we increase Brookline's tax based, bring in more businesses, and can actually afford to fund the schools and town services that bring people to Brookline.
