In 2025, DEI initiatives and public schooling were attacked in the budget session. IDEI programs assist those in marginalized populations with critical resources for understanding processes, finding a sense of belonging, and providing resources for success. Many of these programs allow for basic needs to be met, which is paramount for success. Additionally, tax payer funds should go to our public schools. Public schools allow for everyone to get an education, and to be exposed to individuals who are different from themselves. In a globalized society, it is paramount that citizens understand that they have to live among individuals who think and live differently than they do - and that those differences are where we find strength.
At the next opportunity for redistricting, we need to ensure that maps are drawn in a way that keep neighborhoods and streets together, to make it easier for individuals to understand where they fall in districts. We need to do better voter education in our state, from the process of registering to vote, to how to determine one's districts, and develop resources that allow bills to be more easily accessed by everyone, specifically related to how they are written. Finally, we need to ensure that voting is accessible, in physical location, related to registrations and ballots, and in the number of days people are given to cast their vote.
One of the first things the state can do is better outline processes in places that are accessible. This includes web, but also spaces where families find resources. This could include community boards, institutions of faith, doctor's offices, schools and more. Processes need to be written more clearly, both for the families who need them and the individuals who enact them. The state needs to ensure that there is enough funding provided to support initiatives oriented toward keeping children in positive living conditions, and careful consideration is made when choosing individuals in support roles from the top of agencies to the most direct encounter.
