We should only be required to pay taxes necessary to provide needed public services. Government should NEVER waste tax dollars or charge taxpayers more than needed to run government efficiently. I have consistently fought waste and pushed for lower property taxes. I believe we work for you.
Douglas County wasted millions in tax dollars building a new kids jail cellblock downtown. It has stood empty since it's construction because it was poorly designed ,financed with non voter approved bonds, managed by a private board, built with no bid construction contracts, paid for with the largest property tax increase this century and hasn't helped a single child. I opposed it from the start . I proposed refurbishing the Youth Center campus on 42nd and Woolworth at a fraction of the cost of the kids jail fiasco downtown.
We house all the approx 80 children in our custody at the Youth Center on 42nd St. It would double our costs to open two facilities. We should stop the waste. repurpose the kids jail and fix the Youth Center .
We work for you. Stop waste, lower property taxes, increase efficiency of needed services like improve long term healthcare & mental healthcare services, public safety, juvenile justice, renewable energy upgrades and community grant support.

While I as a teacher appreciate the school funding that property taxes bring, I would absolutely support this constituent's feelings. Wage growth has fallen behind the rising cost of living. As a working class individual, I know that literally every dollar counts. In this case, I would work with the constituent to find the perfect avenue for their concerns, whether that means taking their concerns to the county board or helping them prepare to give testimony to city council.
There is no reason for Douglas County to have two youth correctional facilities. Frankly, the Douglas County Youth Center was/is a waste of taxpayer money and almost certainly should never have been built in the first place. While it is a newer building, which is important from an infrastructure standpoint, it does not have the necessary capacity for a full transition to this building. It is up to the county board and other responsible parties to determine what to do with this building. As county commissioner, I would argue for transitioning this building into a Permanent Supportive Housing facility for unhoused people.
1. Community engagement. Douglas County deserves elected officials who are actively engaged in their community. This means volunteering, partnering with community organizations, and attending community meetings and events.
2. Mental health. As county commissioner, I would strengthen and expand our available community mental health resources so that more folks could access important services.
3. Omaha's STI rates. While our numbers have started to decrease, Omaha has historically had some of the highest STI rates in the country. As county commissioner, I would reorganize our current STI testing resources (ex. shifting county clinic hours) in order to allow for more patients to get available testing.
