State Senator, District 1

The Indiana State Senate is the upper chamber of the Indiana General Assembly. Alongside the Indiana House of Representatives, it forms the legislative branch of the Indiana state government and works alongside the governor of Indiana to creat laws and establish a state budget. Legislative authority and responsibilities of the Indiana State Senate include passing bills on public policy matters, setting levels for state spending, raising and lowering taxes, and voting to uphold or override gubernatorial vetoes.

Years in an elected position I do not hold public office
My key priorities are tied to working families and making life in Northwest Indiana easier and more affordable from both sides of affordability, expenses and income. 1) Making Healthcare, Childcare and Utilities more affordable for working families 2) Increasing worker compensation through increased minimum wage, increased unemployment benefits and unleashing the power of unions to improve the standard of living for working families. 3) Creating a fair tax structure that supports public safety, supports our public schools, our libraries and road maintenance.
Working families are underrepresented in our government specifically in the Indiana State Senate, and I will bring working class sensibilities to the Indiana Statehouse. In my 37 years as a UAW member, I have served as the newspaper editor, Financial Secretary, Vice President and Chairperson of Trustees at my union. I fought corruption in my union and helped to transform the UAW from a union in bed with the corporations we negotiate with to a union leading the charge for better wages and conditions for union and non-union workers alike. Multinational corporations corrupted our union leadership similar to how they have corrupted our state government. I intend to bring the same tenacity to fight corruption to the Indiana State Senate.
I would stop selling out to corporate interests and Wall Street financiers. Giving long term tax abatements has decimated the tax base in our state. Most of the time these corporate giveaways don’t include Project Labor Agreements or Community Benefit Agreements and if they do they don’t include adequate claw back provisions to protect Hoosier investments. When we give tax breaks to multinational corporations it leaves working families to pick up the slack. Working families face increased taxes and reduced services because of the catering to corporate interests.
As State Senator I would have multiple communication avenues for constituents. In addition to the established communications via email, social media and phone, I would hold regular and frequent town halls where constituents would be able to hear about legislation that the General Assembly is considering or has passed and be able to voice their opinions of issues their families are facing. In the meantime constituents can reach me at info@scott4senate.com, www.scott4senate.com or on Facebook @scott4senate.
There are so many it’s difficult to choose but ranking at or near the top is the defunding of public education. This is being done multiple ways and it needs to be reversed. I would propose eliminating school vouchers so public resources stay in public education. I would also propose a more equitable tax structure to fund public schools.
The elimination of childcare vouchers hit working families hard. Childcare costs have increased for those who can even get placed. Many childcare facilities closed and many families have decided it’s too expensive to work because childcare is unaffordable. The families lose income, the state loses tax revenue and the downward cycle reinforces itself. Indiana already has the highest foreclosure rate in the nation. I will propose limits on investment purchases of housing, and investigate the rapid increase in Indiana home insurance rates. High utility costs are a driver of the affordability crisis. Utility monopolies should be limited to the amount they can increase rates. Republicans voted against capping rate increases at up to 3%.
