Improving voter turnout begins at the local level. It starts with trust and making the process easy to understand and participate in. People need clear, consistent information about when, where, and how to vote so there is no confusion.
At the same time, we have to maintain secure and consistent elections so people have confidence their vote counts and the process is fair.
I have seen at the local level that when people feel connected to their community and understand how decisions affect their daily lives, they are more likely to participate. That kind of engagement, built through communication, transparency, and trust, is key to improving turnout.
Local communities should play the primary role in land use and natural resource decisions. These issues directly impact infrastructure, the environment, economic development, and quality of life, so decisions should be made by those who know their communities best.
The General Assembly can support this by providing clear guidelines, best practices, and resources to help local governments make informed decisions.
I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. The focus should be on giving communities the flexibility and support they need to balance responsible development with protecting natural resources.
Funding will always be an issue on some level. I believe Indiana has made a strong commitment to funding public education, but one area that needs continued focus is supporting our teachers. Many schools are facing real challenges hiring and retaining educators, with ongoing teacher shortages across the state.
From my experience in local government, I have seen how staffing gaps affect classrooms and student outcomes. This is not just about funding levels, but about making sure resources are directed to support the people in the classroom.
I will listen, learn, and work with educators to find practical solutions, because strong teachers are the foundation of strong schools.
I believe referendums can be a useful tool for giving voters a direct voice, especially on major issues that have a significant impact on a community. They can help ensure people feel heard and involved in important decisions.
At the same time, referendums should be used on a limited basis. Not every issue is suited to a simple yes-or-no vote, and that is why we elect representatives to study issues, listen to different perspectives, and make informed decisions.
In my view, referendums should complement representative government, not replace it. The responsibility of elected officials is to lead, to listen, and to make thoughtful decisions, while using referendums carefully when it makes sense for the community.
