Position/philosophy statement
No child in Rowan County should attend school in a condemned facility. Our children deserve safe schools - staffed by folks making living wages. As commissioner, I will do all I can to provide Rowan County's kids with resources to learn and flourish.

Alissa Redmond is a Rowan County resident & owner of South Main Book Company in Salisbury NC.
She previously served in India, Afghanistan, Washington DC, Hong Kong, and Bolivia as a diplomat with the U.S. Department of State.
She also worked in the City of New Orleans’ Mayor’s Office for Health Policy post-Hurricane Katrina and volunteered with the Peace Corps to teach English in Fiji.
A graduate of the NC School of Science and Math, UNC-Wilmington, and Duke University (Master’s Degree in Public Policy), Alissa is proud to raise her 15 and 11-year-old daughters in their home state of North Carolina.
She is, and will forever be, a preacher's kid at heart.
My priority as commissioner is to welcome and encourage economic development in creative directions that do not involve Artificial Intelligence. Rowan County has so many opportunities for development that work with - not against - existing neighborhoods.
I am running for a seat on the Rowan County Board of Commissioners because I believe the kids in my county are unsupported in their quest for sound, basic educations. We are the only "renewal" district in the state, and we are seemingly on the verge of losing this inauspicious designation soon as we have failed as a community to make significant progress under these conditions. As a parent of a current RSS student (and a board member for Communities in Schools-Rowan), I am dedicated to supporting our schools, including being a strong supporter of a school bond on the ballot ASAP; our children are worth investing in. Also worth noting - passage of school bond will be necessary much sooner if the proposed amendments pass this election cycle.
Rowan County is uniquely positioned with the majority of available land along the I-85 corridor between Charlotte and Greensboro/Winston-Salem corridor, presenting vast opportunities for development. With experience connecting with global industry leaders as a diplomat, I appreciate seeking outside opportunities to fuel growth here at home. But I also understand the vital importance of investing in our own grassroots, as small business owners pay local taxes while their money circulates more actively in our community than money spent online or with large corporations. I will listen to community members as novel industries present themselves to join us - encouraging growth for existing enterprises whenever possible.
Rowan County recently opened a Behavioral Health Urgent Care that is underutilized due to lack of community understanding of this valuable resource. I would like to do all I can to promote its availability, then see it expanded to include longer-term care options for in-patient services, allowing folks more time to recover near loved ones without significant travel burdens.
Our community also needs to ha e hard conversations around low barrier shelter options for our unhoused population. I intend to be a champion for more options for vulnerable folks as they struggle to meet their basic needs whether I am in elected office or not.
