The Learning Community of Douglas and Sarpy Counties enhances school district strategies for addressing poverty by bridging the gap between home, school, and community targeting poverty at its root causes rather than only its symptoms. Through a comprehensive wraparound approach, the organization supports families in creating stable and thriving home environments. Services include expanding access to postsecondary education and employment pathways, connecting families to housing and public assistance resources, and improving access to physical, behavioral, and mental health services. The Learning Community also prioritizes parent engagement and family support initiatives, recognizing that strong family-school partnerships are essential.
A recent challenge would be in February 2026, a community plan was initially not approved by the Nebraska State Board of Education, placing approximately $7.4 million in funding at risk. When funding is delayed or uncertain, it becomes significantly more difficult to meet the needs of children and families. Such delays create a domino effect impacting staffing decisions, long-term planning, contracts with community agencies, program implementation, and overall service continuity. Stable funding is essential to ensuring consistent, coordinated support for students and the community.
Education Bachelor’s Degree in Metaphysics; Political Science Certificate Program
Military experience Former Service Member, United States military
Volunteer experience Secretary, Colombia Unida en Nebraska Board (COLNEB); Community outreach and leadership supporting cultural events and Latino community engagement in Nebraska.
Learning Community strategies complement school district efforts by focusing on the barriers outside the classroom that impact student success. While school districts focus on academics and school operations, the Learning Community can invest in early childhood programs, family support, and community partnerships that address poverty’s root causes. By coordinating resources across districts and community organizations, the Learning Community helps ensure that students and families have stable housing, supportive environments, and access to opportunities that allow them to succeed in school.
One of the Learning Community’s greatest challenges is ensuring that resources are effectively targeted to the families and students who need them most while maintaining strong collaboration across multiple school districts. Addressing poverty requires coordination between schools, community organizations, and local leaders. The challenge is not only funding programs, but making sure those programs are accessible, measurable, and truly improving educational outcomes for children and families across the region.
