I have been in public service for more than a decade and have worked all levels of the court system. I started my public service as a warrants clerk and then continuing my career in criminal justice as an adult probation officer. I then moved onto the district court as their court coordinator, dealing with felony cases and now a court administrator for county court at law dealing with class a and b misdemeanors, family cases, civil cases, and juvenile cases. During this time in public service, I’ve also earned multiple degrees such as two bachelors degrees one in social and criminal justice and the other in health and human services and a masters degree in public administration.
I see the most important priority is to ensure every case is heard with fairness and dignity. Strengthen community outreach so residents know their rights and resources and to make the Court process more understandable and accessible to the public.
I would prioritize organization in preparation for all dockets, including maintaining a structured docket schedule, review cases in advance and tracking deadlines. I would make sure I had a clear communication with my court staff and anyone coming before the court. I would ensure that court procedures are applied while allowing appropriate time for each case to be heard.

I graduated from the UT School of Law with honors in 1980. I passed the Texas Bar Exam and began working for El Paso Natural Gas Company in El Paso, Texas as part of their in-house legal staff. As an in-house attorney, I provided legal advice and worked on lawsuits, including collection and bankruptcy matters. I also negotiated settlements and drafted contracts. This experience gave me the solid legal background necessary for this position.

In addition, during my time with EPNG, I learned how to ask questions to understand the relevant facts. The skill of being able to ask the right questions to get to the truth is a skill you develop over time. This is a very good skill for any judge, but especially a Justice of the Peace to have.
The most important priority is to follow Texas law in all respects. A Justice of the Peace does make up the law, but rather carefully follows the Texas Constitution and the laws enacted by the Texas Legislature.

The Second most important priority is impartiality. I have to be careful not to let my preconceived notions and biases affect the way I view the case.
Two traits necessary for this are organization and putting in the time to be prepared. The docket, which is large in Precinct 3, is going to be handled by the staff. The steps are:

(1) Make it a priority to completely understand the system and correct any flaws that I see in the system;

(2) Institute a feedback system so that people coming into the court system can give input to help us see flaws that are not obvious;

(3) Take steps to understand the reason for the high no-show rate for Precinct 3 cases and discover ways to reduce that rate;

(4) Put in the work necessary to be well prepared for my dockets;

(5) Make sure the docket allows enough time to consider each case; and

(6) Keep the cases moving.
