One of the biggest challenges is making sure decisions at the state level actually match what schools and students need day to day. Schools are being asked to do a lot, and without the right support, that leads to teacher burnout and gaps for students. We also need to rebuild trust and communication so families understand decisions and feel heard. If we focus on practical solutions that support teachers and students, we’ll see stronger, more consistent outcomes.
AI is a powerful tool, and I want Nebraska students to be equipped to use it effectively. It can improve efficiency and support learning, but it should never replace hard work, critical thinking, or true understanding of concepts. We need clear guidelines for responsible use and to teach students how to use AI as a tool, not a shortcut or a source of truth. The goal is to prepare students for the real world while protecting the integrity of learning.
A curriculum review should be clear, consistent, and involve the people closest to the work. That means teachers, administrators, and community input all have a role. Schools should align materials to standards, pilot them in real classrooms, and use both feedback and data to evaluate what’s working. The process should be transparent so families understand what’s being used and why. Most importantly, we need to focus on quality and making sure curriculum actually supports student learning in practice.
