Over their two-year term, a JP is responsible for:Setting real estate, personal property and sales tax rates in the county.Determining the final budget for county departments and offices - including salaries - and appropriating funds for county expenses.Preserving the peace and order in the county, though they do not have the authority to make any offense a felony. This often takes the form of passing county laws and in some counties making planning decisions.Contract or join with any other county or city, or the federal government for a public purpose.Creating, consolidating, separating, or abandoning any elected office in the county if first approved by voters.Filling vacancies in elected county offices.Providing for any service or performance of any function related to county affairs.Many Quorum Courts also have subcommittees that JPs serve on and discuss the more nitty gritty details before an issue appears before the whole group. The duties of the Justice of the Peace include:
Levying Taxes: They help determine how taxes are applied, following legal guidelines to ensure fairness.
Appropriating Funds: They allocate public funds responsibly for various county expenses, making sure resources are used effectively.
Setting Roles and Salaries: The court decides how many elected officials and county employees there should be, along with their compensation, ensuring that our county government is well-staffed and functioning.
Providing Services: They make decisions about the services our county offers, focusing on what’s best for the community.
I am running because I believe every person in my community deserves dignity, opportunity, and a fair shot at a secure life. After decades of service—whether through community leadership, activism, mutual aid, filmmaking, or my professional work—I’ve seen firsthand where people are thriving and where they are being left behind. I’m stepping forward because I know local government can and should make a meaningful difference in people’s daily lives. I hold a Bachelor’s in Business Administration and a Master’s in Human Resource Management.
The first thing I plan to change/improve is access to services for those who are experiencing food insecurities and healthcare access.
Access to Food: I will work together with local farmers, churches, fire stations, etc. in areas that lack nearby food pantries and collaborate to build these resources in our community. In addition, we will create small, non-perishable, food libraries which will be supported by local partnerships. These pantries will also provide diapers and formula for area residents in need.
Access to Healthcare: I will work together with area medical professionals and glean from current programs across our country to provide mobile clinics to our rural areas.
