COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE
I began my professional career in the financial services industry, working with Merrill Lynch and Lincoln Financial. As a Regional Director, I was responsible for managing both staff and budgets, core responsibilities of a JP. JP 5 has a $645,000 budget and 7 clerks of court.
For the last 20 years, I have invested in and managed commercial real estate, giving me firsthand experience resolving disputes, interpreting contracts, and making fact-based decisions that affect people’s families and property. I hold a Texas Real Estate license, which required a working knowledge of legal contracts and Texas property law. JP courts have exclusive jurisdiction over eviction cases, an area where my practical experience matters.
Approximately 85% of JP’s in Texas are not licensed attorneys, and 4 of the 6 current Denton County JP’s are not attorneys. I am also not an attorney, which brings an important comfort level to the courtroom for everyday Texans, while still upholding the law.
JP courts are among the highest-volume courts in Texas, and timely case disposition is the most pressing issue facing JP5. JP5 currently carries the largest Class C misdemeanor criminal docket among Denton County’s 6 JP courts.
Effective, cooperative work with the District Attorney’s Office is critical to addressing this caseload. I am endorsed by the 5 term, elected Denton County District Attorney, and the DA’s Office has recently assigned a dedicated JP attorney. This partnership will allow the court to increase the number of criminal dockets held each month and move cases to resolution more quickly, while protecting due process and fairness.
As JP, I will fully utilize county-provided technology, including digital records management and e-filing, to streamline court operations, reduce delays, and ensure cases move efficiently through the system. My focus will be on fair, timely justice that respects the time of citizens, law enforcement, and court staff alike.
Beyond efficiency, another critical issue in this race is judicial temperament. JP courts are neighborhood courts, operating with more informal rules and procedures, and many litigants represent themselves. It is essential that everyone who enters the courtroom feels respected, heard, and at ease in presenting their case. As Justice of the Peace, I will bring a calm, fair, and caring demeanor, while also requiring personal accountability from those who appear before the court.
I will also prioritize public education by ensuring citizens have access to clear legal forms and educational brochures explaining common JP cases. When people understand the process, cases move more efficiently and outcomes are fairer for all parties.
Finally, I will cross-train court clerks so they are knowledgeable across the full range of cases handled in the JP court. This will improve service to the public, reduce delays, and ensure the court operates efficiently regardless of staffing changes.
Public confidence in the judicial system is essential. Judges, including Justices of the Peace, are bound by the Judicial Canons of Ethics, not only while serving on the bench but also as candidates for office. While Texas law permits campaign contributions from citizens and attorneys, ethical standards require impartiality at all times.
The majority of attorneys who have supported my campaign do not practice in Justice of the Peace courts. Regardless, as Justice of the Peace, I will remain fully impartial, deciding every case based solely on the facts, the evidence, and the applicable law. No donor, individual, or outside influence will affect my decisions from the bench.
