An elected school board member serves a three-year term. The school board represents the concerns of citizens, taxpayers and parents to the school administrators, and represents the needs of the students and school district to citizens, taxpayers and parents. The school board does not operate the district on a day-to-day basis; that is the job of the superintendent (the district’s chief executive). Rather, the school board sets policies, goals and objectives for the district, and holds the superintendent responsible for implementing those policies and goals. I am seeking reelection to the Board of Education because I believe public education is the cornerstone of strong, thriving communities. During my 15 years with the New Jersey School Boards Association, I worked closely with elected officials and education leaders to advance policies and programs that strengthened schools across our state.
That experience has given me a deep understanding of governance, policy, and the challenges facing our schools today. Serving on the High School Board of Education allows me to give back to my community, ensure that every student has access to high-quality learning opportunities, and help foster an environment where both students and families can thrive.
If reelected, my first priority would be to strengthen collaboration by understanding the dynamics of the Board and building positive working relationships with fellow members. A Board of Education functions best when it operates as a unified team, grounded in respect and shared purpose.
Secondly, I will take time to listen and learn—deepening my understanding of Sterling’s unique strengths, challenges, and priorities. By doing so, I can ensure that any goals I help set are thoughtful, evidence-based, and aligned with the needs of our students, families, and community.
Ultimately, my focus is on contributing to a board culture where decisions are made with transparency, inclusivity, and the long-term success of our schools in mind.
Test scores are one important measure of student learning, but they do not capture the full picture of a school’s success. As a Board member, my role is not to micromanage the instructional decisions of administrators and educators, but to understand the data, ask thoughtful questions, and ensure that our district’s strategies are aligned with student needs.
I believe that a strong school climate and a positive culture are foundational to academic achievement. When students feel safe, supported, and engaged, they are better able to learn and thrive. In this next term, I will support efforts that strengthen student engagement, foster a positive school environment.
The safety and security of our schools must always be a top priority, as students learn best when they feel safe and supported. Safety extends beyond physical measures—it also includes fostering a positive school climate where students feel valued and connected. As a Board member, my role is to collaborate with school leadership, review and understand current protocols, and ask thoughtful questions to identify areas for improvement. By supporting both security initiatives and efforts that strengthen school culture and student engagement, we create an environment where students feel secure and ready to succeed.
