Somerdale School District {_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}

An elected school board member serves a three-year term. The school board represents the concerns of citizens, taxpayers and parents to the school administrators, and represents the needs of the students and school district to citizens, taxpayers and parents. The school board does not operate the district on a day-to-day basis; that is the job of the superintendent (the district’s chief executive). Rather, the school board sets policies, goals and objectives for the district, and holds the superintendent responsible for implementing those policies and goals. I have dedicated my time in grassroots organizing. I would not be true to the words and actions I try to inspire if I did not engage in the one of the best ways to get involved. Starting in your own back yard. Everyone can have an opinion on how things should be done. We need to collectively come together to get into positions to be able to turn those opinions into tangible actions.
My first goal would be to get more parents involved in respects to the Board of Education meetings. Many people (including myself) show up when there is a "problem" but we need to bridge the gap by creating a well rounded relationship between us parents and the school. I also believe in advocating for students physical and mental health when it comes to schooling. The right support for the teachers directly translates to the support they can give our children. Our foundation should to be solid so we can continue to lift the students and school higher.
I do not like standardized test. Though I have to be honest, they are our best way to gauge the level our students are at. It can help finds the gaps in where students need the most help. Test scores can also directly impact the funding a school district will receive. Unfortunately, some students can be "bad" test takers. Others could be like me who could easily regurgitate the lessons given right before the test. Critical thinking should be a priority in schooling as well. Also, some kids can't get a proper meal before test taking. I believe the school should be able to provide a way to ensure all children are at the same equal starting point before a test is administered.
Our school currently has fire alarms that trigger a direct alert to our local PD. I think if more school could implement those it may ease the minds of the teachers and admins of schools. This ease of mind would help teachers focus on the students. With active shooter and lockdown drills conducted monthly, this technology would help make both the teachers and students feel safer.
