The accessibility of mental health and supportive services
Ensuring safe communities
Quality of life
As chair of the Committee on Mental Health, Disabilities, and Addictions, I developed the Mental Health Roadmap with the support of the Speaker’s office which seeks to increase access to preventative and supportive services. The shortage of mental health services has exacerbated the homelessness crisis in this city. The lack of access to in-community healthcare has presented a challenge for those suffering from mental illness and continues to contribute to the “revolving door” of treatment and discharge. This includes measures for supportive housing to assist some of our most vulnerable New Yorkers so that they receive the full continuum of care they need.
I support law enforcement, and I will continue my close work with all four of my district’s precincts to ensure that our communities feel safe to improve their quality of life. My office regularly hosts outreach events with City agencies to ensure that they are responsive to residents’ concerns and that will continue to ensure that we maintain our quality of life.
Adding protections for residents facing steep financial penalties from Local Law 97 compliance
Working with agencies to Improve infrastructure to mitigate damage from floods and storms
Keeping our schools funded to ensure quality educational experiences in our community
I will continue the work to address New York City’s Mental health crisis, by improving the Mental Health Roadmap. The Roadmap includes several stops that address the mental wellness of our students, veterans, and maternal mental health. By providing this care, along with preventative mental health services, we can ensure that New Yorkers most in need have access to the necessary supportive housing to keep New Yorkers in need off of our streets.
The decades of disinvestment into our mental health care system has exacerbated many of the issues we are currently facing. A lack of supportive housing and professional workforce are critical issues that the roadmap seeks to address as it continues to grow through City Council legislation.
