1. Public Safety & Gun Violence
* District 18, like much of the Bronx, continues to struggle with shootings, youth violence, and community safety concerns. Residents are calling for stronger prevention programs, better lighting in vulnerable areas, and more trust between police and the community.
2. Housing & Homelessness
* Rising rents, lack of affordable housing, and unsafe living conditions in NYCHA developments are pressing issues. Families face long waiting lists for housing assistance, while shelters remain overcrowded.
3. Sanitation & Quality of Life
* Illegal dumping, uncollected trash, and broken streetlights are common complaints. Poor sanitation contributes to rats, health hazards, and a general decline in neighborhood pride and safety
1. Public Safety & Gun Violence
* Community Programs: Invest in after-school programs, sports, and mentorship to keep youth engaged and away from street violence.
* Prevention First: Push for funding community violence interrupter programs and mental health resources.
* Trust & Transparency: Hold regular community-police forums to rebuild trust between law enforcement and residents.
Wilfredo’s Message:
"We don’t just need more policing—we need prevention. We’ll stop the cycle of violence by giving our youth opportunity and our community a voice in how we are protected."
2. Housing & Homelessness
* Fight for Affordable Housing: Advocate for stronger tenant protections and push for the development of affordable and supportive housing.
* Fix NYCHA: Demand accountability and investment in NYCHA repairs to ensure safe, livable conditions.
* Support Families: Expand rental assistance and rapid re-housing for families on the brink of homelessness.
Wilfredo’s Message:
"Every family deserves a safe roof over their head. I’ll fight to fix NYCHA, expand affordable housing, and protect tenants from being pushed out of their homes."
3. Sanitation & Quality of Life
* Cleaner Streets: Organize community clean-ups while demanding increased sanitation pickups from the city.
* Accountability: Advocate for better enforcement on illegal dumping and hold property owners accountable for neglect.
* Safer Streets: Push for quicker repairs of broken streetlights and sidewalks in vulnerable areas.
Wilfredo’s Message:
"District 18 deserves clean, safe streets we can be proud of. I’ll fight for more sanitation services and work side by side with residents to restore dignity to our neighborhoods."
top three priorities in the first 100 days if elected:
Strengthening Community Safety: Launch targeted neighborhood programs, partner with local organizations, and ensure our streets are safer without criminalizing youth.
Supporting Education & Youth Development: Expand access to after-school programs, mentorship, and resources that keep young people on track and prepared for success.
Economic Empowerment & Job Access: Connect residents with job training, opportunities, and resources—especially for small businesses and entrepreneurs—so that everyone has a path to financial stability.
My most ambitious goal is to create a Bronx where every young person has real opportunities to thrive—whether through education, mentorship, or employment—so that they can break the cycle of poverty and violence and truly succeed in life. I want to ensure that our neighborhoods are not just surviving but flourishing.
The biggest challenges include limited funding for youth programs, systemic barriers that make access to quality education and jobs unequal, and the lingering effects of crime and poverty in our neighborhoods. Overcoming these requires collaboration between government, community organizations, and residents—and the political will to prioritize long-term solutions over short-term fixes.
