Building Brighter Futures
I originally ran for the BOE to fight for the students and parents of Sayreville. I will continue to do that. Working with the school administration I will continue to help bring curriculum changes and new courses like American Sign Language 3. I also believe in keeping our budget in check. In my 3 years on the BOE we have never gone above a 2.5% increase.
I have a step-daughter in the high school in Sayreville and have a step son who graduated SWMHS. I get to see the schools through both the parent and BOE perspective. I have learned how the BOE operates and what we are allowed to do. I have worked on the Governance, Finance, Student Discipline and Teamster Negotiating Committees.
In my next term I will continue to work on improving the facilities of our schools. I will work on getting parents more involved and keeping an open line of communication. I will also continue to try to work with the Borough to include the Sayreville Schools in their PILOT negotiations.
We are lucky in Sayreville to have a fantastic business administrator who keeps the district running smoothly. The biggest component of the budget is salary and benefits. This cannot be touched as we must pay our teachers and staff fairly and provide good benefits. This can only happen with a partnership between the BOE and the unions that represent different parts of the school staff and faculty. I also believe we must maintain out services to students, including tutoring and extra help. Any part of the budget that impacts students must be protected.
This can be done in a few ways. We must start a better line of communication with the Sayreville Council! We need to be involved in PILOTS! We also must work within the guidelines of the state of NJ. Working with Trenton keeps Sayreville from getting our aid cut. State aid makes up a big part of our budget.
I enjoy seeing a full house at a BOE meeting! I love hearing from Sayreville residents and I do take their opinions to heart. I weigh their thoughts along with my own. In the end I always ask "Is this the BEST decision for Sayreville Students?" If parents suggest a change that will improve the schools for our students, I will always side with them. In the end though, I was elected and will make a decision base on all information.
I believe ICE has a very important role in our Country. I also believe school should be the safest place it can be for all students. I would never support allowing ICE into our schools or having access to student records. School needs to be a safe space for all our students.
Sayreville needs to continue improving what we offer students. We need to stop making excuses and hold kids accountable, so they can preform well on NJ standardized tests.
