Smart growth near transit with incentives for developments that include workforce units will grow our stock. We also need to streamline approvals for products that meet our benchmarks and modernize zoning to permit ADUs where they can be supported by our infrastructure. The County can leverage land banks and surplus properties for affordable housing while tying infrastructure investments, such as sewers and transportation, to projects that deliver workforce housing. I support stronger partnership with our unions and nonprofits to solve the housing crisis and ensure young families and workers can remain in Suffolk.
I support statewide packaging reduction legislation, enforcement of the bag ban and alignment of County purchasing with PFAS regulations. Reduction of nitrogen can be achieved through septic upgrades, along with boosting stormwater and fertilizer controls. A single county-town compact would coordinate Brookhaven’s closure, prioritize rail export and secure long-term contracts that are transparent. I look forward to leading with solutions in the legislature.
I would communicate with my community proactively and make myself easily accessible to constituents. This is something I already practice through social media, email and in-person community presence. Great leaders are great listeners. I plan to listen deeply to the voices of my constituents and ensure they are always provided with the information they need to provide input on decisions that impact their lives.
Unfortunately, Suffolk will be forced to act as a stabilizer amid these unconscionable cuts from the Trump administration. We must immediately identify core services that are most at-risk and protect those items in our budget while advocating for Albany to do its part. We can also engage in discussion with towns to pool resources, expand shared service agreements and aggressively pursue new state and federal grants. I support deep transparency with constituents as we wrestle with this crisis.
We discussed one of the pressing issues above indirectly. Nitrogen from failing septics is degrading our bays and harming our drinking water. I’ll work to expand our septic replacement program, bolster standards and secure upgrade funding.
The other huge issue is housing. I’ll be a leader on zoning reforms, smart growth, expanded workforce housing and infrastructure upgrades to ensure quality of life for all of our residents.
I view my job as ensuring we succeed on a countywide strategy to keep Suffolk livable and improve the lives of our residents.
