I believe strongly in the value of life experiences. Living life and experiencing life’s ups and downs while finding solutions and dealing difficult people. These things add up to the kind of real life education that makes the best qualification to serve as a member of city council. Formal education is very helpful by giving someone the basic skills and knowledge to create a habit of lifetime learning.
Education: high school graduate, college graduate
Community: church leadership; president of a local business association; board member of a private school; active member in Rotary.
Politics: Republican precinct president; Greer Planning Commission for 7 years serving as Vice-Chairman and Chairman; member of the Airport Environs Commission as to land use around the GSP Airport.
Career and business: Manager with Milliken & Co.; combined 34 years real estate manager, agent and broker. Business owner 27 years.
Pickens City council since December 2024.
Many mistakes leading to success
Prior to my start on city council, the decision to exit the agreement with Pickens Regional Joint Water System and to enter into a temporary water purchase agreement with Greenville Water had already been made. As I joined council the issue needing to be considered was a permanent agreement with Greenville Water. I supported council's decision to exit the agreement with PRJWS and to enter into the permanent agreement with Greenville water. The reasons for doing these things were based on sound logic, reasonable assumptions and legal considerations.
I would not propose anything other that to apply and implement the sources of funding that already exist. New housing will not change the basic principles upon which the city provides services and pays for them. There are impact fees, water and sewer tap fees, monthly utility revenue, fire service fees, sanitation fees, real and personal property taxes, sales and accommodations taxes, franchise fees business license fees, to name the main ones.
In my discussions with some department heads I and others on council see the need to update some of our industrial controls and monitoring systems as it pertains to our utility infrastructure.
Our recreation department needs additional athletic fields and improvements to existing ones. Having tournament quality fields will bring additional income to the recreation department as well as tourism to our town.
We need to continue to make improvements to our city’s landscapes and greenways.
Our zoning ordinance still needs to be reviewed and updated where necessary. This is tedious work but council needs to make this a project for the next council year.
