The most significant challenge facing the citizens residing in Ward 2 is how to effectively participate in how their city government is run. I see this as a huge issue among the voters I’ve talked to. I believe if there was more education and better communication, we could alleviate much of the uncertainty and disillusion voters feel. One comment I hear often is “they’re going to do what they want to do anyway” so why participate. This is not acceptable in my opinion. Civic participation should be simpler to follow and easier to understand. I’m retired and have no business to promote so I have time to research things. A lot of voters don’t have that luxury. Effective communication and empowering voters is very important to me.
When I was in the military, I was known for being approachable, a good listener, and solutions oriented. I will lead with that and foster a sense of common purpose which is to make sure Franklin remains a place where the views of the voters are respected. I will be open, honest and transparent. My actions will demonstrate that. While bringing this to the table, I will reach out to other Aldermen and gain their perspectives on the issues before the Board. I had a lot of success in the military and a lot of that success came from effective communication with others.
Voters choose their elected leaders and expect them to represent their wishes in how they want their city to be run. From speaking to the voters in Ward 2, they do not feel they are being listened to and if they are, they feel ignored. Balancing growth vs quality of life starts with the consent of the governed which are the voters. I will work to foster more participation in the governing process by educating the voters and making the government process simpler and easier to follow. With that comes a need for information sharing. Voters must be made aware of what elected leaders are basing their decisions on. They are asking for infrastructure to catch up to already approved growth. They are asking for disciplined spending in order to save
I hope to have an ongoing open dialog with voters in Ward 2 so they will be informed of everything as time goes along. Using my own experience learning how Franklin government works, I will work to make it easier and simpler for voters to do the same.
