Flemington Borough Council {_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}

Flemington is governed under the Borough form of New Jersey municipal government. The governing body consists of a Mayor and a Borough Council, with all positions elected at-large on a partisan basis as part of the November general election. A Mayor is elected directly by the voters to a four-year term of office. The Borough Council consists of six members elected to serve three-year terms on a staggered basis, with two seats coming up for election each year in a three-year cycle. The Borough form of government used by Flemington, the most common system used in the state, is a weak mayor / strong council government in which council members act as the legislative body with the mayor presiding at meetings and voting only in the event of a tie. The mayor can veto ordinances subject to an override by a two-thirds majority vote of the council. The mayor makes committee and liaison assignments for council members, and most appointments are made by the mayor with the advice and consent of the council.

My motivation to run for a second term on council is to continue the positive momentum seen throughout our community since Covid and shepherd initiatives started in my first term forward. Planning requires long vision and patience, and progress is sometimes difficult to see. My second term on council is an opportunity to embrace action of previously goals, simultaneously engaging with newer residents to get a fresh perspective for improving the Borough of Flemington and adjusting long set objectives as needed.

Concurrently appointed to the planning board by four Democrat and Republican mayors over 15 years, I provide a unique, bi-partisan perspective of the interwoven roles, check and balance, and influence planning board and council have on the built environment.

My professional background in planning law and sustainable design encourages infill development, respecting our historic district and understanding important storm water and infrastructure parameters.
My second term will focus on what residents expect from their local government: economic security. This is a cost of living election, and my first term focused on learning as much as I could about municipal budgets. I voted against raising the municipal rate, and this year, voted for a 0% increase.

This year, we required the review of each budget line item in detail, and was able to find several places to share services within borough departments, reduce some budgets, and identified duplicate line items.

Taking advantage of low interest I-bonds projects, combining multiple utility projects over several years, and pursuing more grant money are three ways I plan to keep the municipal tax rate in check.

We have some significant budgetary challenges ahead such as rising health and refuse costs, and we must continue to find creative ways to continue to incorporate these larger budget line items each year.
As previously stated, fiscal consistency is the primary responsibility of the members of a municipal governing body. Yearly, inconsistent factors influence and effect municipal budgets tremendously: Federal, State, County and School Districts. The municipal body is subject to these unknowns and yearly budgetary changes of each entities, and must show thoughtful, empathetic leadership and come up with ideas at each year’s budget negotiations to provide a level of consistency and fiscal responsibility.

Another prime role of the municipal governing board is to be cheerleaders of our community. It is our job as council to encourage businesses to invest in our municipality, create local jobs for our residents, celebrate and promote our accomplishments to others, and hold landlords and property owners accountable.
Our local law enforcement should not be engaged in activity conducted within our municipality by ICE at all. One of our first actions as council earlier this year, was to meet with our Chief of Police, who assured us our police department was not required, by New Jersey state law, to assist federal forces in any activity within our municipality.

The federal government, however, should have an obligation to inform our local law enforcement of any planned federal activity within the municipality.

I love Flemington. My family moved here because it’s a community where we instantly felt at home. I’m running for borough council because I want to help keep what makes Flemington, Flemington, while keeping the momentum the current council has built towards an even more vibrant future.

I’ve worked in consulting and business for over 30 years, growing from my first job as an hourly copywriter to years of leading high performing consulting and design teams delivering projects for Fortune 500 companies. In my time in business, I’ve developed a keen understanding of how groups work (or don’t work) together to accomplish a shared goal - even if they don’t think they have a shared goal. My colleagues recognize me for being deliberate, thoughtful, insightful, and skilled at managing the complexity of large projects with diverse teams. I plan to bring these abilities to support the efficient, effective collaboration of the council, and Borough operations.
The people of Flemington, just like people all over New Jersey, are facing an immense affordability challenges. To keep delivering the services, our neighbors rely on, I’ll be working side by side with my running mate Councilwoman Susan Englehardt, to keep our community humming while staying ahead of growing Borough expenses. Taking advantage of low interest I-bonds projects, combining multiple utility projects over several years, and pursuing more grant money are three ways we plan to keep the municipal tax rate in check. We have some significant budgetary challenges ahead such as rising health and refuse costs, and we must continue to find creative ways to continue to incorporate these larger budget line items each year.
My running mate couldn’t have said it better: First, fiscal consistency is the primary responsibility of the members of a municipal governing body. Yearly, inconsistent factors influence and affect municipal budgets tremendously: Federal, State, County and School Districts. It is our job as council to encourage businesses to invest in our municipality, create local jobs for our residents, celebrate and promote our accomplishments to others, and hold landlords and property owners accountable
Our local law enforcement’s responsibility is to the safety of our community and neighbors. Involvement in ICE activities is not required by New Jersey law, and runs counter to the Borough Police’s building trust in the community. That trust is critical to keeping our Borough the safe welcoming place it is.
