Cleveland City Council, Ward 08

Term: 4 yearsSalary: $80,133Incumbent Ward 7 Council member Stephanie Howse-Jones and ward resident Charlotte Perkins were the top vote-getters among the five candidates who ran in the Sept. 9 Ward 8 primary. Cleveland s wards were reduced from 17 to 15 this year, resulting in ward redistricting across the city. The new 8th Ward includes the northern half of downtown and spreads east to include Asia Town, St. Clair-Superior, and Hough. Here s a map of the new Ward 8. Cleveland municipal races are nonpartisan.

My approach to promoting public safety, while strengthening trust between Cleveland residents and the city’s police force focuses on three key strategies: 1 -Building stronger neighborhood connections where residents start neighborhood groups where community members can get to know one another and look out for each other. Strong relationships are the foundation of safe and thriving communities; 2 - Connecting residents with the 3rd and 5th District Community Relations Boards, which offer a direct line of communication with police commanders and officers serving our neighborhoods, helping to build mutual understanding and trust; and 3 - Encouraging residents to report the suspicious/harmful activity they see. See something, say something.”
My top priorities for supporting safe, quality housing and preventing displacement include advocating for policies that promote shared housing, encouraging community-based ownership models like housing co-ops, and motivating residents to start or join neighborhood groups that work together to support and look out for one another.
To increase civic and voter participation in historically underrepresented areas, I am focused on three key strategies: promoting our local Grassroots Grant Initiative, which offers small grants to help address community issues; improving communication to keep residents informed about how my office, Cleveland City Council, and the City of Cleveland are working on their behalf; and advocating for more civic information to be available in the languages spoken by our residents.
I will continue to connect residents in my community to the economic opportunities that are available for career advancement (MAGNET, Towards Employment and Greater Cleveland Works) and business growth (ECDI Cleveland, Urban League of Greater Cleveland Entrepreneurship Center and Cuyahoga County Office of Small Business).
The biggest challenge facing residents in the new Ward 8 is securing sufficient financial resources to meet their basic needs for housing, food, childcare, clothing, transportation, prescription medications, and other essential expenses.
