Duluth City Council Member District 2
As local legislators who sometimes have executive power, council members can propose ordinances, set administrative policy, and authorize the budget proposed by the mayor. They oversee all city activities, including city services, programs, licensing, and public safety. Mayoral appointments to city government typically require council approval. As a civil engineer, educator, and land use planner, I understand the importance of providing public services as a shared interest of the people. I've dedicated my career to planning and educating decision-makers on how communities can use land sustainably so we can live, work, and play in an urban setting while being respectful of the environment.
I served as Duluth’s Natural Resources Coordinator to protect important green spaces alongside an urban setting. I worked to clean up historic pollution and restore habitat in the St. Louis River. I’ve owned a small business, taught in our schools, and was proud to be in three different unions. I’ve advocated for housing and been a strong proponent of climate change action.
1. Tackling Duluth’s housing and homelessness issues and working with health and safety professionals to restore the downtown area back to a welcoming space.
2. Encouraging local investment and attracting new markets for a more sustainable economy and finding creative ways to increase affordable childcare.
3. Stewardship of our parks, trails, and natural systems and unleashing the power of volunteers while rebuilding our social fabric through care of our public spaces and neighborhoods.
I will work to reach out to residents to build their trust by encouraging them to contact me with concerns, questions, and ideas for the city. I hope to hold periodic community gatherings where residents can meet one another and join in conversations related to city issues and concerns. I will work hard to practice the skills I have learned to focus on being an active counselor that truly listens to constituents.
I’d invite residents to attend city council meetings and/or volunteer to be on a commission. I’ve volunteered with groups to provide information on how to advocate for housing and climate related policies at the local and state level. The process is similar no matter the issue and I will continue this work as well as encourage people to become more aware of local decisions being made. Informing residents that they have a voice and how to use it with civility helps make a healthy democracy.
