Over the past 6 years, we’ve worked hard to address flooding. Acquiring open space ensures there is land to absorb water but also prevents additional development and impervious surfaces that make flooding worse. Currently Somerset has over 25,000 acres of preserved land. We have partnered with the Green Brook Flood Control project which has helped protect much of the county along the Raritan River. We have also overseen the Blue Acres program in Somerset County to purchase homes that are in danger of repeated flooding. However, we cannot control storms. For this we have developed a world-class Office of Emergency Management that prepares for the worst and coordinates with all 21 of our municipalities, the state, and the federal government
Expanding the dual-stream recycling program with next-generation trucks. These trucks are expensive up front, but allow us to collect & sort recycling more quickly & efficiently for greater revenue from reselling and are safer for our staff. The communities that have begun using the dual-stream bins over the past few years have all reported that they are much simpler to use, easier to bring to the end of the driveway, and don’t spill so their neighborhoods remain cleaner. So far we have reached about half of the county with the new bins and trucks, and we need to accelerate the expansion to the entire county. Smart planning for today & beyond like these automated trucks is the kind of budgeting that gets us a AAA bond rating
ICE is a federal agency that enforces federal laws. The County Commissioners have no role in enforcing local, state, or federal laws and as such do not have any role in interacting with immigration agents.
