Biographical Information

School board members have collective authority rather than individual. How will you foster a spirit of collaboration with your fellow board members to successfully work together on behalf of the students?

School districts are funded primarily by district taxpayers, used by district families, employ a large amount of teachers and staff, and serve to educate our youngest generations. As a candidate, which of these groups do you prioritize in your role as school director, and why?

Some school districts have experienced heated debate over new policies under consideration. In your district, what student needs do you feel should be addressed, or not addressed, by the school board?

How do you perceive the recent pattern of taxation (annual millage rate increases) on your district in relation to current school district needs?

I attempt to foster mutual respect and connectivity by example. Every Director brings a unique lens, set of experiences and skills to the Board; and individually none of us hold power without the other, myself included. By listening, showing curiosity and sharing responsibility, we can build the relationships that allow us to have courageous conversations and make difficult decisions together.
My first priority is to our students - current and future. They are our greatest asset, and reason for public education. That said, in the school district of Lancaster there are a large number of stakeholders that wear multiple hats. Generational families who are graduates, parents and grandparents, and often also our prized employees. They invest in our community day in and day out, so I am mindful of the intersectionality of our communities.
In the School District of Lancaster, we know that students are ready to learn and achieve when their basic needs are met, they have consistent caring individuals in their lives, and where all students not only feel included but seen, valued and empowered. Those are my priorities and I believe they should be the priorities of all of our public schools. I also believe that one of the most important needs we have addressed post-COVID is building social emotional intelligence. They are learning how to recognize their emotions, and are building capacity to self-regulate. Meeting those needs are paramount to our students' success.
The Board of Directors in SDOL has continually been fiscally responsible, raising taxes by a small rate each year knowing there would not only be a financial cliff at the conclusion of ARP-ESSER Funding, but also a looming structural deficit we could not mitigate. The District has been chronically underfunded, and recently won a Commonwealth Court lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of PA's funding model. Two years later, we must continue to budget conservatively because the Commonwealth has not made good.
