The issue of school safety has become increasingly prominent in recent years, demanding the urgent attention of all those in the district. It is my responsibility to ensure the well-being of students and staff, as well as to help them feel secure and protected. Our district does an excellent job of providing the safeguards necessary to create that environment. However, we can always do better. The current board, along with the superintendent, chief of police, and safe team members, continues to learn and evolve our systems accordingly.
One area I believe deserves focused attention is the implementation of large-scale, non-intrusive systems for detecting potential threats to our students and staff. A system that would expedite the screening process and scan all individuals and could significantly enhance our preventative capabilities.
While our district is proactive in addressing school safety, the evolving nature of potential threats necessitates a continuous pursuit of improvement.

Over 20 years in executive leadership roles, with strong experience with budgeting and program management. Volunteer non-profit board member. ESASD board member for the past seven years.
ESASDs most important issue will be the retirement of many teachers over the next few years. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the district built several schools and hired new teachers and support staff. This group has now arrived at their eligible retirement date (and a good number even past) and will be exiting the education profession. As they retire, the district will need younger educational professionals to take their place. The district has made strides to create a competitive wage and salary structure to attract new staff. Creating a positive work environment that draws potential staff to the district will be key as new teachers will have many districts to choose from. A proactive board that works well together and recognizes this need will be instrumental to our success.

There are many challenges facing our district, but if I had to choose the biggest, I would say funding. Without adequate funding, we simply can’t provide the programs, support services, or infrastructure our children need to thrive.
We need more resources for mental health, bullying prevention, curriculum development, and staff training. Every child—no matter which school they attend—should have access to innovative teaching, strong athletic programs, and engaging extracurriculars. We also need new ways to inspire and support parent involvement.
As a parent with children in the North schools, I’ve seen the disparities firsthand. And the recent data shared by our superintendent confirms what our kids already know: students at the North schools feel isolated and unsupported.
I don’t claim to have all the answers to an issue this big—but I am committed to listening, collaborating, and fighting for solutions that serve all of our students, families and educators.
