Education
BA in Psychology from Temple University (2008); PhD with a focus in Developmental Psychology from New York University (2016)
Experience
Teachers Assistant for introductory course on Developmental Psychology for three semesters. I have worked for Temple University's IRB for the past 8 years (the most recent 5 have been as the Director). I have reviewed or facilitated the review of 100s of education studies.
1. Create a whistleblower-protection policy to help establish a culture where staff and educators are comfortable and emboldened to report suspicions of misconduct or abuse.
2. Establish a policy that set prescribed time-limits on how long investigations can take. The policy would have to be flexible, given the unpredictable nature of cases that warrant investigation, but a policy should exist.
3. Look for additional opportunities and resources to prevent educator and staff burnout, including efforts to they feel as appreciated as they deserve to be.
4. Examine recruiting and hiring practices in an effort to increase staffing in the areas that are currently understaffed, like special education and transportation professionals.
Yes. I have watched and attended school board and committee meetings. I am familiar with the structure and am very comfortable with board procedures given my experience on the IRB (Institutional Review Board) for the past 8 years.
The focus of my PhD was Developmental Psychology, so I am familiar and extremely interested in how children learn, grow, and thrive. This knowledge and interest are further bolstered by my daily discussions with my wife, who has been an elementary teacher for the past 14 years. These conversations have given me insights into school operations, curriculum, classroom management, and the viewpoint of our teachers. My role in Temple's IRB (reviewing research to ensure it is safe and ethical) has me regularly exposed to new research methods in education and educational interventions. I also regularly interact with and edit policies. Lastly, parenting my two children (Willow-9 and Peter-3) requires flexibility, adaptability, and understanding.
