Both of my children currently attend schools in the Plum Borough School District. I also have been leading the PTO at each of their schools - this involves interaction with student guardians and school faculty, creating and managing a budget for the non-profits, organizing and planning events, and presiding over others within the organization. These experiences would directly contribute to serving as an effective school board member, as there is a lot of overlap in responsibilities, just on a larger scale.
Unfortunately, it is likely that cuts will affect our schools’ budgets, especially knowing that we receive Federal Title funds. Pursuing other grants where available, reducing unnecessary or inflated spending, and finding new income streams are pivotal. Additionally, supporting the parent-teacher and booster organizations in turn supports the schools by reducing burdens that may otherwise be on the district (ex: field trips or assemblies, student events, equipment, etc). Our residents have been overtaxed rapidly to make up for previous shortfalls instead of smaller, more frequent incremental increases, and that cannot continue.
There is already a process in effect for opting out of state testing (such as PSSAs) - which requires a parent or guardian fully viewing the material on which they have a concern and then opting their student(s) out on a religious basis. If a parent or guardian wishes to opt out their student(s) from accessing books or receiving standard curriculum, a similar process should be individually allowed. However, this should NOT impact the other students, as students should retain access to an exemplary education and books to expand upon that. I do not support blanket bans on books.
