As a lifelong public servant, including working at the US EPA for 37 years, I am running for Borough Council because I want to make a difference. I understand governmental process and have many of the skills needed for successful governance—including analysis, oral and written communications, grants management, and working with other partners. As a regular attendee at Council and committee meetings, I am well aware of the issues Council is facing. I would be able to jump into the job easily, ready to build upon my volunteer experience on the borough’s comprehensive plan steering committee, as a co-founder of Paulson Park, and as a board member of the former Swarthmore Community Center, among other positions.
I commit to listening to the community and to making Council as accountable and transparent as possible. As a regular attendee of Borough Council meetings and its committees, I follow decision-making about zoning, finance, public safety, and other functions. I attend these meetings to stay informed and to ensure good practices are followed, speaking out when I have noticed there was lack of transparency; changes in process were often made as a result. I commit to preparing and posting agendas and minutes in a timely manner; attending meetings on a regular basis; holding committee meetings regularly; and ensuring that the public is aware of actions taken and under consideration.
My top priorities are to implement the comprehensive plan that will be completed this summer; find additional ways to improve communications with residents; and work across Council committees to improve the condition of our local parks, starting with better understanding of what the community would like. I want to work toward a more diverse and inclusive Swarthmore, created through a focus on more diverse housing and improved parks and public spaces, as well as a more engaged public.
