I was employed by a school district as a school district police officer and was involved witht he inner workings of a school district. For 6 years I attended school board workshop and general board meetings and have learned the processes and timelines of certain things that make a school district run. In my role I also interacted with different departments within the district and learned their role and what services they provided to the district and students. School safety is also a strong skill
I am running for school board to bring about positive, forward change to the district. For too long things have remained "status quo" and stagnant. Also, transparency has been a major issue with the district and has lead to residents questioning the board an filing right to know requests to obtian information that if the board made public would be discussed and nothing more would come of it.
1) Educator and staff recruitment and retention.

2) Increasing unfunded mandates: Continued unfunded mandates by the state harm budgets of disctricts. This needs to be looked at more.

3) Cyber Charter & Charter Schools: While there are some that have decent academic marks, some of these have fallen into an area where they continue to not meet the standards. The fact that the home district has to pay for the student to attend is a burden to that district. Change/reform needs to happen.
Yes. Our schools need to teach students on how to be successful. For too long the focus was on college and skills needed for life were neglected or eliminated. I wached Hom Ec/Family Consumer Science classes be eliminated from schools. These types of classes taught me basics that carried on into my life later on. These classes should be updated to reflect the modern world we live in. Things like debt, loans, and saving for retirement should be taught. Also basic vehicle and household repairs.
Having family and friends in education, there has been an increase in AI being used to cheat on exams, and be used to complete assignments. This takes away from the critical thinking skills used later in life.

ZOOM/Microsoft Teams and the like have their place. However in person activitie promotes social interaction. Today people are so use ot interacting with a device and/or a screen, that the personal connection of conversation and non-verbal body langauge is going the way of cursive writing

Qualifications 11 Years Experience as a School Director
First let me explain my background. I spent 35 years as an air traffic controller and 17 of those years as a Frontline Manager training, certifying, and supervising air traffic controllers. Additionally, I have extensive training and experience in dealing with union and service contracts. After I retired, I decided to run for a school director position because it is the only unpaid elected position in Pennsylvania where I could help the students, their parents, and the taxpayers.
I am running for school board director because there are a few current projects I would like to see completed. One example is with the Building and Ground Committee, which is exploring the options to build a sports field house adjacent to the stadium. Our goal is to build a multi-use indoor sports facility that fits within our budget without any increase in the real estate tax rate. I have been re-elected twice to the Schuylkill Valley School Board.
Funding - Safe School Environment - Parents Rights The largest issue that haunts every school board is their budget and whether there will be a real estate tax increase. At Schuylkill Valley we plan ahead and allocate funds to projects so when the time comes to move forward on an improvement the funding is available without any increase in the real estate tax rate.
Schuylkill Valley started a life skills class over six years ago. It covers a variety of topics that students will be dealing with after graduation such as buying and financing a car, how loans work, how to balance a check book, how to buy a house, what type of insurance do I need, how credit cards work, etc.
AI and Emerging Technologies will gradually begin to move into the classroom, but I think it will be more visible in the way we teach the core subjects of math, English, science, social studies, and history. Berks Career & Technology Center (BCTC) will be the anchor site for AI and emerging technologies for high school students in Berks County. Schuylkill Valley is a funding district for BCTC and we have a large number of students attending BCTC every year.

Qualifications Law Enforcement Officer/Non-Profit Leader
Throughout my 30-year career in law enforcement, I have developed a strong foundation in leadership, crisis management, and strategic problem-solving. I bring that same commitment to fostering a healthy, safe, and supportive school culture.

I have also held leadership positions on non-profit boards, where I worked collaboratively with diverse groups to drive initiatives, manage resources, and create sustainable impact in our community.
In recent years, it's become clear that there's a growing disconnect between the school board, the administration, and our community. We've seen a troubling loss of dedicated staff, a lack of transparency in decision-making, and too many disruptions that distract from our core mission- supporting our students and educators.

I believe it's time to restore trust, communication, and accountability.

My goal is to strengthen the partnership between the board and our community.
Safety and Security -Ensuring the safety of our students and staff is my highest priority. When individuals feel secure, they are better able to focus on what truly matters, teaching and learning.

Transparency & Communication - Open and timely communication fosters trust and community engagement.

Recruitment and Retention of Staff - Focus on strategies that both retain our talented staff and attract new professionals who are passionate about education. A positive work environment is a must.
While traditional academics lay the foundation for intellectual development, students also need practical skills to successfully transition into adult life.

Incorporating subjects such as home economics, financial literacy, and civics into the curriculum would equip students with essential life skills. These programs would not only complement academic knowledge but also enhance students’ ability to navigate real-world challenges, ultimately fostering independence, and long-term success.
The emergence of these types of technology has become commonplace not only in schools but also in the workplace. In the educational system, its significance is steadily growing and influencing nearly every aspect of teaching and learning.

By integrating technology into the classroom, students can engage with the material in new and interactive ways. These tools not only expose students to the latest technological advancements but it broadens their learning experience beyond the classroom.

There are a lot of teachers leaving Schuylkill Valley, I would like to know what is the cause.
Social media and the school board becoming political.
Teach life skills.
I am not sure either of these is a replacement for traditional learning.

I have been involved with the teaching of children for most of my life. I try to stay up to date on the best practices of educating children by reading educational materials, by attending workshops and conferences, and listening to what works in our classrooms. Serving on my board has allowed me to learn about educational policies, mandates, construction challenges, personnel issues, technology needs, safety and security measures, curriculum updates, and the budget process among other items.
I definitely enjoy the challenge of being a board member. I want to see the young people of our community get the best education the SV budget can provide so that they can enter the workforce with the skills employers are looking for, enter college with great transitional skills to succeed in higher ed or with the skills necessary to be flexible and functional in the military. I am an avid supporter of vocational education and am pleased that SV now has an active agricultural program.
Budgets are a challenge for school districts. It is important to keep our costs in line with our tax base. Most of any school budget is salaries and benefits and it is important to have well trained and competitive wages. Curriculum is important. Creating classes that produce students who can read at or above grade level is quite important. Providing technology opportunities that will benefit all students as they move on is important. Safety and security has signicant importance.
Family and consumer science courses address some of these issues. We offer a financial literacy type course which will be a required course by the state. Civic engagement opportunities are part of quite a few clubs in our district. High school electives offer cooking/baking. Self reliance should come from being responsible for homework, getting to school on time, having an after school job or being part of a sports team
AI is here to stay. Young people are already using it outside of school. AI will be of greatuse especially in Tech Ed classes to help students innovate and invent. Zoom classes would be an asset in offering elective classes with lower numbers of students or by sharing such classes with other schools. Zoom can be used to have el Ed or middle schools share with pen pals or experiences with other schools in US or abroad.
