New Jersey residents face economic and social crises that have been made worse by Trumpism. We still need Medicare for All, expanded and improved social services, housing as a human right, and measures to offset the growing problems posed by climate change and environmental pollution. We need to protect First Amendment rights of free speech and the right to assemble in protest. We need to protect law-abiding immigrants living and working here, to live and pursue good lives.
We need ranked-choice voting, to eliminate the potential for spoilers in elections, and to ensure that the will of voters prevails over machine politics. We need to stop the creation of laws that define people protesting genocide as terrorists and antisemites, and ensure that the right to protest government policies is protected.
Enacting Medicare for All New Jersey residents would (1) eliminate people going into debt and losing their homes, because they have become sick or injured. Replacing the predatory health insurance system with a guarantee of healthcare free at the site of service would also cost the the State and employers far less money as they will no longer be faced with paying high premiums to cover employees' health care. People with incomes over $250K per year would be taxed at a higher rate than people making less. We must eliminate allowing billionaires to be exempt from paying taxes. Most can pay at a rate of 50% of their income and wealth, and still be the wealthiest people in the world. We need paid parental leave, paid sick time, and paid vacations for all workers. We need to eliminate the state funding of Israel, while using that money to help fund and improve public education. We also need to stop the State from raiding State workers' pension funds, and bring back the COLA for pensioners.
Higher tax rates for wealthier residents and businesses in New Jersey could provide funding for schools in New Jersey. School lunches must be free for all students, regardless of income. We need to have funding to hire more teachers, improve and repair school buildings and grounds, and provide more support staff to meet students' needs. While I fully support public education, I also believe that families must have the choice about how their children will be educated. Many families home school for various reasons, including working with children with learning differences who might not be served properly in school, or to design their own curricula tailored to their children's needs, without interference from the State.
NO ICE! Bands of masked men kidnapping random people off the street, from their homes and businesses, are nothing more than new versions of the KKK. The kidnappings and lynchings of people because of the color of their skin or their national origin HAS TO STOP. This is one of the worst episodes in US history, and the US has had a deplorable history of racist policies since before its inception. Instead of locking people up in strange lands without and legal recourse, we need to provide a clear path to legal residency and citizenship.
